Unexpected Experience

During the summer of 2014 I was lucky enough to obtain a job working in North Carolina. At the end of the school year I knew I wanted to do something with my major and that I did not want to stay at home. In April I decided to move to North Carolina to live with my aunt and uncle for the summer. I took the 10 hour trip alone, and on the way there I got into a car accident which made me think that maybe this was not what I was supposed to do. However, God proved to me later that it was where he wanted me, and I learned a lot that year. There I worked at a museum, making promotional videos for their website. At the time I only had a few media comm. classes under my belt so I went into it unexperienced, but willing to learn more. The museum was a one roomed museum and did not get many visitors, so it was definitely not what I expected. When I first started the job I found myself doing more office work and cleaning and less videography. It was frustrating at first, but when they started having events and set up their new exhibit I was able to get footage and put together a few videos for them. For one of the projects a group of kids took a field trip to an outdoor historical site and I got to capture the kids doing a bunch of different chores and games that would have been done back in the day. Overall, this job was not what I expected, but I learned a lot, and it also gave me video samples that I later used for my application for the summer camp. I’m on Top of the World

Last summer I had the opportunity to be the videographer at a summer camp in Colorado. The camp was called Eagle Lake and it was on a mountain, 9500 ft. elevation to be exact. The elevation change was very noticeable, the scenery was literally breathtaking.

Eagle Lake is a camp for kids 7-14 and it was all about teaching kids how to live a life for God while having a great time doing outdoor activities and building relationships with everyone around them. I had the privilege of documenting all the exciting activities the kids did throughout the week and compiling it into a video for the kids to take home at the end of the week to show their parents. It was my dream job! I was able to hang out with kids and counselors every day and then edit videos for 10 weeks, I could not have asked for a better opportunity. There was not really anyone there with video experience so I was basically doing my own thing, but I felt pretty confident with it after all the classes I had taken. Not only was this job amazing, but it was challenging. I really had to step out of my comfort zone during this job by talking to people I did not know, and trying to get the kids to cooperate for the shots I was trying to take. I also learned a lot about patience not only with kids, but with technology. There were many circumstances where I ran into a road block trying to make videos. One night I lost some of the footage I had already edited into the video which made it unable to be exported. Another time was when I lost the entire video at mid-night the night before the morning I had to have it done by. I lost a lot of sleep, and encountered some frustrations, but I wouldn’t have traded it for anything. Along with the relationships I built and the video experience I acquired, I was also able to build my relationship with God.  It was hands down one of the best summers of my life!
